Obituary for Mr. Daniel Karanovich

Mr. Daniel “Dan” Karanovich, age 88, of Marietta, GA passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2019. He was born November 12, 1930 in Besco, East Bethlehem Township, Washington County, PA. Upon his high school graduation and prior to his enlistment, Dan served as a proud coal miner. He later retired from the United States Army, having attained the rank of staff sergeant, after 22 years of service. He would continue a civilian career with Atlanta-based United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) where he served as a mechanic.
Due to his military service obligations, Dan and his family relocated throughout his deployments. His duty assignments included the 24th Infantry Division, the Taro Division; Army's 1st Aviation Brigade, the Golden Hawks (Ft. Rucker, AL); and the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM).

Dan, even in retirement, continued his charitable and patriotic service to veterans and their families by serving in various leadership positions including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses (commonly known as The Forty and Eight). Navy MWR’s Navy Lake Site Allatoona (Cartersville, GA) often served as Dan’s home away from home as he enjoyed camping, fishing and boating along with family, friends, and fellow active duty, retired military, guard, reservists.

Preceding him in death are his son, Jeffrey Dan Karanovich (2014); parents Rade “Fred” Karanovich (1957) and Julia Hegedus (1943); brother Stephen Karanovich (2008); sisters Mildred Karanovich Grigonis (1956), Mary Ellen Karanovich Trobovich (2015), Jane Karanovich Meeks (2015), Donna Rose Karanovich Hill (2010).

He is survived by his wife Norma Doman Karanovich; son Alan (Colleen) Karanovich, daughter Cassie Karanovich; brother Fred Karanovich; grandchildren Christopher “Ryan” Karanovich, Evan Karanovich, Jamie Cook, and Erin Kelly as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, September 8, 2019 from 3:30PM-5:00PM at Benson Funeral Home (Dallas, GA). Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2019, immediately following the visitation, at 5:00PM. Interment, with full military honors, will be held on Monday, September 9, 2019 at 9:30AM at the Georgia National Cemetery (Canton, GA).

In lieu of the flowers, contributions are requested to support Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO) in memory of SSG Daniel Karanovich, U.S. Army, Retired. VEO seeks to provide housing, supportive services, job training and placement to homeless veterans and their families.
